AbstractBecause of the high rate of failure of engineering students in a required engineering physics course at the University of Texas at Austin, College Board Achievement Test (CBAT) scores in Mathematics Level 1 for 537 students enrolled in the course were compared with their physics grades. Performance on the mathematics section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test was also investigated. Since the correlation between scores and grades proved inadequate, 283 students beginning the physics course took the CBAT in physics for later correlation with final course grades. This, in combination with CBAT Mathematics Level 1 scores, provided an adequate correlation, but one which might detour too many students into an introductory physics course. Therefore, performance in the required physics course of those students who had taken introductory physics was compared with that of students who had not. When correlated with performance on the CBAT Mathematics Level 1 scores, three cutoff scores were identified: (1) scores of 600 or below strongly suggested enrollment in the introductory physics course; (2) scores between 610 and 680 indicated a borderline area; and (3) scores above 690 indicated readiness for the required physics course. (Appendices include sample CBAT items and instructions for students; student questionnaire items; and a letter from the chairman of the physics department setting forth the cutoff score recommendations).
